Applications: Pharmaceutical intermediates, edible spice, mainly used in the preparation of butter, milk, yogurt and strawberry flavor. 

Production technology: 1. It is formed in the fermentation of glucose by certain bacteria(Enterobacteriaceae). 2. Restore 2,3-Butanedione to generate acetoin.
